What's in a name? A lot of things, actually. The word laundromat comes from the words "laundry" and “automated." As you can imagine with self service laundry facilities being called washaterias back then - there was some confusion on what they exactly offered until someone coined the term 'laundro-mat' for these types of businesses which are now known around town simply by everyone saying 'I go to my little red machine every Saturday'.
